0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet: The Ultimate FAQ Guide

Before importing a 0.5mm polycarbonate sheet, read this guide.

It covers all the vital aspects of 0.5mm polycarbonate sheet including properties, benefits, applications, and joining mechanisms, among other important facts.

If you want to be an expert in 0.5mm polycarbonate sheets, then this is a must-read guide for you.

Let’s dive right in.

What are Polycarbonate Sheets?

Polycarbonate sheet

Polycarbonate sheet

A polycarbonate sheet is simply thermoplastic in form of a transparent sheet.

It is very tough and absorbs very little moisture when exposed.

This toughness is what increases its resistance to impact.

It cannot be damaged by water, chemicals and is flame-retardant as well.

Across the plastic industry, a polycarbonate sheet is among the most flexible materials in the market and is reliable for making very many types of products.

 Polycarbonate structure

What is a 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet?

 0.5 mm polycarbonate sheet

0.5 mm polycarbonate sheet

Polycarbonate sheets come in many different sizes.

The thicker the polycarbonate sheets the stronger and rigid the polycarbonate sheet is.

It is therefore able to achieve a greater span between the supports.

Its resistance to impact is also increased.

In the same way, their thicknesses determine their various physical structures.

Their number of walls changes from one type to the other and these changes their design and structural changes.

Some of the common sizes range from less than 0.5mm to more than 35mm.

The sizes will determine its features and therefore their applications.

A 0.5mm polycarbonate sheet is among the thinnest sheets and they are used in different applications.

However, even with the thinness, it still has the many advantages that come with thicker polycarbonate sheets.

Manufacturers of products that require high flexibility often choose the 0.5mm polycarbonate sheets as compared to other materials such as acrylic.

This is due to its inherent features such as strength that makes it unbreakable even when bent.

It becomes easily foldable.

Apart from its small size in terms of thinness, it still has the other features that polycarbonates are known to have.

 Thickness of polycarbonate sheet

How Strong is 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet?

Polycarbonate gets its strength from its incredible strong chemical structure.

Its molecular structure strengthens its bond in high numbers and the unique resistance levels.

This strength raises its ability to withstand forces and impacts.

Despite its resilience, it is a very flexible material.

This is what makes it allow incoming pressures and impacts and absorbs the force as it returns to its original shape.

0.5mm polycarbonate has a tensile strength between 55-75 force per unit area.

This makes it 200times stronger compared to alternatives like acrylic and glass.

What are the Advantages of using 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheets?

There are many benefits when you choose to work with a polycarbonate sheet as compared to other materials.

Some of the advantages are:

It is one of the toughest plastics found on the planets.

When compared to glass in terms of weight, polycarbonate is 5 times much lighter than glass.

This makes it very easy and safer to install.

It is transparent and allows 90% of the light available to shine through it.

Polycarbonate sheet is incredibly strong.

It can be thermoformed many times without it losing either its strength or its quality.

Polycarbonate sheet is able to resist impacts in a better way compared to its counterpart acrylic sheet.

When working with polycarbonate sheets, it is very easy to drill, form, cut or bend it.

It has a very high abrasion-resistant.

This makes it prevent UV light from entering to spoil items or cause discomfort.

It only allows softer light meaning that anything enclosed in 0.5mm polycarbonate sheet is believed to be safe.

A 0.5mm polycarbonate sheet is known to offer the best insulation and excellent thermal efficiency.

It is very easy to cut a 0.5mm polycarbonate sheet.

You can actually use a pair of scissors to cut it.

What are the Disadvantages of using 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet?

0.5mm polycarbonates sheets are very susceptible to scratches.

Despite the fact that polycarbonates are known to have high resistance to impacts, they easily get scratched.

This makes it hard to use polycarbonate sheets in clear surfaces.

If they are used, then they are covered with a scratch-resistant layer to give protection on the polycarbonate sheet.

Polycarbonates release Bisphenol A (commonly known as BPA) when it comes into contact with water during degradation.

This makes them hazardous, especially whenever they come into contact with food.

Polycarbonates are commonly made in a combination of BPA together with COC l2.

However, since the release of BPA has a toxic effect, most manufacturers have resulted in the production of BPA free polycarbonate sheets.

This is to allow such products to be used in food industries where water and food perishability is a concern.

How do you Stick 0.5mm Polycarbonate?

A 0.5mm polycarbonate can be stacked using other materials such as:

  • Methyl Methacrylate
  • Polyurethane

You can also use either glue or Epoxy to stick a polycarbonate sheet on another material.

Before sticking, you will need to prepare the surface for bonding polycarbonate.

First, make sure there are no contaminants.

Start by rinsing the polycarbonate sheet using lukewarm water to clear any sand, dirt and any hard materials that may harm the sheet through scratching.

Put some small amount of dish soap into the lukewarm water.

Using a clean sponge or cloth, dip inside and rub gently on the polycarbonate to do away with all the small contaminants that are there.

Rinse the polycarbonate sheet.

By this point, the polycarbonate sheet should be ready for glueing.

Bonding polycarbonate

 Bonding polycarbonate

Joining 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet with Methyl Methacrylate

The most advisable way of fusing polycarbonate sheets is by using methyl methacrylate as it is able to create a very strong and resilient bond.

Some people have discovered that when trying to pull polycarbonate apart, the polycarbonate may break even before the methacrylate bond breaks.

When you are applying the methyl methacrylate, ensure that you are either outside or in a properly ventilated space.

This is because the fumes produced by the methyl methacrylate may be very toxic if it is inhaled in excess.

Lightly apply the methyl methacrylate on a clean piece of polycarbonate sheet on the area you wish to join.

Let it soak until it feels sticky and ready for bonding.

Join the polycarbonate sheet to another piece of polycarbonate, hold them firmly together up until they can offer each other support.

The time may differ but on average this should be around five minutes.

As long as the polycarbonate can offer support to its weight, you may leave it for 48 to 72 hours.

By then it will have been firmly joined.

Joining 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet with Polyurethane

Another type of plastic that can be used to bond polycarbonate sheets is the use of liquid polyurethane.

Polyurethane is very applicable in low temperatures of even -40F.

It does not become brittle like other kinds of adhesives do. It is very resistant to chemicals such as salt, oil and gas.

The common type of polyurethane glue is Gorilla Glue.

Even though the bond won’t be totally clear and strong like the methyl methacrylate, the physical properties of polyurethane attract many users.

It is also important that you make sure you are in a very well-ventilated space.

Then you can follow the below steps:

  • Using a foam brush or applicator, apply the polyurethane glue on a clean sheet of polycarbonate.
  • Hold firmly together with the polycarbonate sheets until they start sticking together. Do this for some few minutes.
  • Once they are well connected and cannot fall, let it dry for about 48 hours.
  • In about a month, the polyurethane will have stacked perfectly well allowing the polycarbonate sheet to undergo regular use without splitting.

How do you Fix Broken 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet?

When repairing cracks on 0.5mm polycarbonate, it may seem difficult but just like most common plastics it can also be heated and moulded again.

The most important thing is knowing the right method to repair the broken part.

If it’s only a small area that is broken, it can be fixed with glue, plastic slurry or hot water.

Larger cracks may need a soldering iron for welding.

As long as you use the correct method, it may turn out to be very easy to repair a polycarbonate crack than you think.

You can use normal plastic glue specially formulated for bonding polycarbonate surfaces.

Glue is mostly used for making models and is therefore safe and easy to handle by adults.

Just make sure you are having enough to cover the required section to avoid starting in the middle of the process.

You may use most of the available super glue but be keen to check that it is applicable to polycarbonate sheets.

Put the glue on the edges of the crack. Squeeze the tube and spread the glue on the edges you need to reconnect.

Have a wipe or cloth nearby to wipe the excess glue as fast as possible before it hardens.

You should also be ready to reconnect after applying glue. It dries very first.

Do this in a well-ventilated area or have a facemask when handling glue.

Put on gloves to prevent the glue from sticking on your skin, as it may be painful to remove.

Once you connect the broken polycarbonate cracks, leave the glue to dry before using the polycarbonate again.

Depending on the type of glue you use, the drying period may vary.

It is good to check on the packaging for the drying time.

In average, you may leave it for about an hour before using it.

Does Epoxy Resin Stick to 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet?

 Structure of epoxide group

 Structure of epoxide group

Yes, epoxy resin works perfectly well in bonding 0.5mm polycarbonates.

Epoxy resin is also known as epoxide glue.

Epoxy is a simple way that can be used to stick 0.5mm polycarbonates together.

It is a quick fix solution for polycarbonate materials like ceramic.

Even though epoxy is suitable in some cases, it does not qualify as the best method for sticking polycarbonates.

It may leave marks after application and can only offer an almost similar bond compared to superglue.

If being applied on a 0.5mm polycarbonate whose use will be outside, it may not be helpful.

It is not recommendable to use epoxy as it may start turning yellow if continuously exposed to UV rays.

Sticking epoxy resin on 0.5 mm polycarbonate is rather simple.

You can follow the guides below as long as you are doing it outside or in a room that is well ventilated.

  • In case you are using a two-part epoxy, read carefully the instructions on the packaging on how to mix the two parts.
  • Apply the epoxy resin on a clean sheet of the 0.5 mm polycarbonate that you need to stick.
  • Hold firmly another piece of polycarbonate sheet against it for about 5 to ten minutes or until you can feel the bond is strong
  • Rest it for about 72 hours before stressing it. The epoxy resin may take about a week before it fully dries on a polycarbonate 0.5 mm sheet.

Does 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet expand in the Heat?

The 0.5mm polycarbonate just like other polycarbonate sheets will expand when exposed to hot weather and contract when exposed to cold.

When using a polycarbonate sheet on a cold weather, you should be careful.

You should take into consideration the change in weather and the usage of the product on a hot season.

To avoid problems when using a 0.5mm polycarbonate, follow the manufacturer’s guide on its use.

In order to understand the amount of thermal expansion for your 0.5 mm polycarbonate sheet, you may need to contact your distributor.

Most manufacturers will account for thermal expansion when they are designing different polycarbonate sheets depending on their use.

Manufacturers may also offer guides in terms of the size of the hole compared to screw size to take care of the thermal expansion that may happen.

What are the Applications of 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet?

The 0.5 mm polycarbonate sheet can be cut using a knife or scissors or even on a laser cutter.

The polycarbonate can be creased using a hot or cold technique.

The ‘hinges’ that result from this can be folded several times without breakage.

Some of the features that add value to its uses are:

How much does 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet Weight?

Polycarbonates are generally flexible and light materials and that is the reason why they are used in places where light and strong materials are required.

This advantage has made it very demanded in the market especially for construction uses.

0.5mm polycarbonate is very light but this will depend on the length in consideration.

In general, one cubic meter of a 0.5 mm Polycarbonate sheet will weigh 1200 kilograms

one cubic foot of a 0.5 mm Polycarbonate sheet will weigh 75 pounds [lbs].

How long does a 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet Last?

Polycarbonate sheets are known to stay for long. However, the longevity will depend on other factors such as where it is used and how it is used.

Some may fade if they are used outside on the sun.

But since 0.5mm polycarbonate is mostly used for a short term such as stationery, blister packaging etc., they always serve their purpose well before being dumped for recycling or proper disposal.

However, even with the dumping, the waste polycarbonate sheet can stay for many years even more than 50 years.

How do you get Moisture Out of 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheets?

Polycarbonate is hydroscopic and can therefore absorb moisture from the atmosphere.

The bottom of the polycarbonate sheets normally has a breather in form of a tape fitted.

There is a secure sheet fixed to make sure that this process goes on perfectly and that excessive moisture is not retained.

To remove this moisture, make sure that the seal at the top is properly fitted.

The sealing tape should also be applied without the creases since this will let air into the individual cells of the polycarbonate sheets.

You can run a thumbnail along with the tape on both the bottom and upper side of the sheet to eliminate the creases.

Polycarbonate sheets do need to breathe.

The temperature changes make the air in the cells to expand and contract.

The sealing tape can prevent this from occurring.

How do I Curve the 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet to follow the façade Curve?

 Bending angle

Bending angle

Polycarbonate is the most preferred form of plastic.

Although it is more like glass in appearance, it is much lighter than glass.

It can be cold bent to tighter curves for various applications.

Polycarbonate sheet bends easily due to its excellent flexibility factor.

It can be reformed several times without changing its characteristics.

You can bend a 0.5 mm polycarbonate since it is much thinner and can withstand any impact forces and the sheet will not shatter.

Some of the most common bending techniques are:

  • Cold Line Bending
  • Cold Curving
  • Break Bending
  • Manual Press Brake
  • Hydraulic Press Brake
  • CNC Press Brakes
  • Hot Line Bending
  • Using Thermoforming Polycarbonate to form a bend

Cold Line Bending Polycarbonate Sheet

It is not a must that a polycarbonate sheet is heated in order to bend it.

However, you will be required to observe a few factors to get the best results.

The factors are the angle of bending and the tools.

You should use a sharp object.

Give the bent polycarbonate time to after bending it.

Never force a polycarbonate sheet into your desired final form or alter the bending angle in between.

You may have to overbend if there is a chance of spring back occurring i.e the bent polycarbonate sheet reverting to its normal state.

Try cold bending on a small piece before doing it on the working piece of polycarbonate.

After getting the desired results from the sample, you can now work on your piece.

To avoid cracks from forming on the bending lines, ensure the edges have a smooth finish.

Without removing the protective film, bend the sheet rapidly.

In order to ensure the spring back take the sheet to the desired angle, you should bend it 20-40o more than the angle required.

NOTE: Cold line bending should not exceed 90o this will exceed the elastic limit.

What Screws do you use on 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheets?

Fixing a 0.5 mm polycarbonate can be difficult especially in choosing the screws to use.

However, it may get easy if you consider a few things.

Where you are pinning the polycarbonate sheet and what purposes it will serve.

Based on where you are pinning it, at times you may not need screws but glue if the surface can use adhesives.

If screws are necessary then you will need to choose a screw long enough to hold the sheet.

The screw should have a wide cape.

This increases the surface area on which the screw firmly presses the polycarbonate sheet.

It is good to note that due to the feathery weight of a 0.5mm polycarbonate, it may not be advisable to hold a large piece of 0.5mm polycarbonate using screws.

The wind may blow it due to weak support due to the large unsupported area that is hanging.

Does 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet Block UV Light?

0.5mm polycarbonate sheet with protective layer

0.5mm polycarbonate sheet with protective layer

Yes, the polycarbonate sheet can be adapted to prevent the entry of UV light.

All polycarbonate sheets come with protective films to block the UV rays.

This is one of the many benefits that polycarbonate films have.

They protect the skin from the harmful UV radiation from the sun.

For this moderate light from the sun, polycarbonate sheets are the best and you should choose them anytime you have a chance to.

Is 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet easy to Cut?

Polycarbonates are generally easy to cut.

You can use a utility knife since 0.5 mm polycarbonate is easy to cut.

You can also stack the sheets together to shorten the time spent on cutting the sheets.

In this case, you can use a circular saw to cut straight.

You can also use a jigsaw if you need to cut into odd shapes or angles.

It is very important that you always wear personal protective gears like gloves, earmuffs, goggles and any other gear that may be helpful.

How do you Cut 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet?

First, start by laying the carbonate sheet on a flat surface over the edge probably a saw station or a table.

Hang the section to cut polycarbonate sheet off the edge.

At this point, you will realize that you do not need to work in a tight place or at a corner.

You need a free area.

If you are cutting polycarbonate sheet without stacking several pieces together, you may score and snap the sheet.

Secondly, put on your gears especially the protective goggles.

If you snap the polycarbonate sheet, several pieces of polycarbonate may fly off the line you cut.

To make sure you do not damage your eyes or hands, put on your thick gloves and protective goggles.

Thirdly, mark the lines where you will cut with a marker.

Measure the cuts that you intend to make carefully with a measuring tape.

To keep a straight line, use a straight edge to draw the line.

You can use a permanent marker, dry eraser or a pencil to mark the sheet.

While holding the knife tightly against the sheet at the edge of the marked line, press it down with moderate pressure.

Slide the knife’s blade at 45o angle through the line.

Do not press hard. Cut halfway through the sheet.

Hold the sheet on the table by pressing it down with one hand.

Press down the excess section with considerable pressure to snap it.

Scoring is one of the easiest ways of creating a clean line for 0.5 mm polycarbonates.

There are various ways of cutting a 0.5mm polycarbonate sheet.

These are brought about by the various tools that can be used.

Some of the ways are:

a) Use of a Table Saw

b) Use of a Band Saw

c) Use of a Circular Saw

d) Use of a Jigsaw

e) Laser Cutting of 0.5 mm Polycarbonate

Cutting of 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet by use of a Table Saw

Use of a table saw is one of the excellent ways of cutting a polycarbonate of 0.5mm thick.

It gives a very precise and clean-cut for polycarbonate sheets.

To begin, first, you need to measure and mark the cut.

After the marking, go ahead and frame the mark with masking tape.

Find your table saw.

Mount a fine-toothed blade on your saw.

A fine-toothed saw blade is the best when it comes to cutting polycarbonates.

Once your saw is ready, push the polycarbonate sheet slowly through the saw just like you do with plywood.

Do not put pressure on the saw as this may crack the polycarbonate.

Simply let the saw do the cutting alone.

While pushing, do not exert too much or too low pressure as this can crack the polycarbonate.

Just push the sheet steadily at moderate pressure and don’t stop until you complete the cut.

Cutting 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet Using Band Saw

A band saw is cutting equipment mounted on a table and works so well when it comes to cutting polycarbonates.

A band saw has the unique and excellent ability to cut all types of polycarbonates of any thickness.

In order to use the band saw, a fine-toothed blade one with at least 18″ teeth is required.

Mount the blade on the band saw and adjust the speed of cutting to at least 2500 RPM

One everything is firmly set; push the polycarbonate sheet through to cut.

Once the cutting is complete you can stop.

Cutting 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet using Circular Saw

Circular saws are the most common type of saws known for their production of quality finishes on different materials.

When it comes to polycarbonates, circular saws offer the same quality service.

They are able to cut through thick polycarbonates as well as 0.5 mm polycarbonates.

To start, begin by mounting the blade that is appropriate on the saw.

Using a sawhorse or support of your choice, clamp the polycarbonate sheet tightly.

Grasping the saw with both hands, push it forward slowly to cut the polycarbonate.

Do not force the saw, let it move with the cutting pace.

Don’t be too slow as this may melt the polycarbonate sheet.

This saw is only used for making straight cuts.

curves or non-straight lines, you might have to use a band saw or a jigsaw.

Cutting 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet Using Jigsaw

Like I said above, curves and non-straight lines are best cut with a jigsaw.

Put the polycarbonate sheet on a flat cutting surface.

Press the sheet with the saw while pointing the blade to start cutting.

Do not apply force or pressure on the jigsaw.

Start the motor and guide the cutting blade through into the polycarbonate sheet.

If you are cutting curves, direct the saw according to your curves.

Make sure you cut properly without the deflection of the blade as this might overwork the saw.

Laser Cutting Polycarbonate Sheet

 Laser cutting polycarbonate sheet

Laser cutting polycarbonate sheet

Lasers are the powerful optical beams used in slicing through an array of materials such as glass, metal, wood and polycarbonate.

The laser should be directed to the polycarbonate and carefully moved to cut it as per the shape you need.

When cutting through the polycarbonates, the lasers produce fine finishes.

You will only need to set the beam intensity suitable for a 0.5mm polycarbonate.

Lasers bring with them precision and accuracy when cutting polycarbonates.

Since they are automatic, they can cut in complex operations with very high speeds.

What are the Colours available for 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet?

Polycarbonate sheets may come in different colours.

These colours include Opal, Clear, Bronze, Heatguard and Bronze Opal.

Different manufacturers will choose to produce in various colours depending on their market needs.

Polycarbonate face shield

Polycarbonate face shield

Polycarbonate sheets are very effective in the medical sector for making face shields.

They are able to make replaceable and transparent face shields that can offer protection from particles, splash and any other flying debris.

Health care workers use this face shield to cover their face and eyes thus protecting themselves from infectious fluid splashes or hazardous substances.

Face shields made from polycarbonates are of high quality, are able to withstand chemicals, impact, heat, and can help prevent the spread of infectious diseases like Corona Virus (covid 19).

Polycarbonate face shields are transparent and provide a very high optical clarity.

It is very light and is easily processed in shapes that manufacturers desire.

Does 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet come with Protective Films?

0.5 mm polycarbonate sheet do come with a protective film.

This accessory is essential when producing polycarbonate sheets.

The function of this film is to cover the sheet from scratches or other damages that happen during the handling and installation.

Remove the protective film once you finish installing.

The polycarbonate sheet is intrinsically poor in resisting scratch and this serves as the main reason why the protective film is applied in all polycarbonates sheets.

All instructions necessary and useful to the user is written on the protective.

This includes producer details, installation details, cleaning instructions and an indication of the side that is UV protected.

Any protective film must have glueing properties.

It must be able to glue the sheet firmly enough in place until it is time to use the polycarbonate sheet.

There should be no residue left once the protective film is removed.

The film should be easy to apply to the polycarbonate sheet without forming any wrinkles.

The colour and printing of the protective film must not migrate to the polycarbonate sheet when exposed to the sun or heat.

What is the Light Transmission Percentage for 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet?

1 Light transmission through polycarbonate

Light transmission through polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is highly considered due to its properties of light transmission among others.

Polycarbonate is a much famous alternative to glass since it is able to offer the highest amount of transmission,  more durable, impact-resistant and much lighter than glass.

Polycarbonate sheets are able to transmit light at 80-90 per cent.

The lightweight in polycarbonates is able to allow enough light to pass through.

Polycarbonate sheets are made in a way that they are able to protect against UV rays from the sun.

However, the polycarbonate may start to wither with time and this in turn reduces its protection.

You may need to check out for manufacturers who make the additional layer of protection from weathering and protection from UV rays.

This will increase the longevity of the 0.5mm polycarbonate sheet.

Polycarbonate is designed in a way to protect the structure against the UV radiations of the sun.

However, as and when the structure gets old, the polycarbonate may be wither, which in turn reduces the protection.

You need to look for suppliers who add an extra protection layer on the polycarbonate against weathering and UV rays to increase the lifespan of your structure.

Is 0.55mm Polycarbonate Sheet used in Food Handling?

Yes, food-grade polycarbonates do exist.

It is mostly used in hospital trays, serving bowls, candy moulds and many more.

But how can you use these polycarbonate containers safely?

Only use the polycarbonate container for the intended purpose.

If it is not safe for dishwashing, you should not put it in a dishwasher.

If it is only meant to be used with cold liquids, do not keep hot liquids.

Do not use polycarbonate containers with cracks, abrasions or other damages.

These cracks may cause leaching on the polycarbonate.

Acidic foods should not be stored in polycarbonate sheets.

Some acids from food can draw chemical substances from the polycarbonate container into the food.

You should not use abrasive scrubbers to wash polycarbonate containers.

The scratches may cause leaching.

What is the Heat Resistance Rate for 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet?

Polycarbonate sheets offer very good heat resistance.

Polycarbonate is thermally stable and can get up to 135°C.

To increase heat resistance, flame retardants can be added and this will not impact the material properties.

What is 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet made of?

0.5 mm polycarbonates are found in a class of polymers which have carbonate links.

Polycarbonates are classified into either aliphatic polycarbonates or aromatic polycarbonates.

It all depends on the structure of the R groups.

The polycarbonates are made by condensation of polymers between Bisphenol A and the diphenyl carbonate.

The bisphenol A can be produced through the condensation of phenol together with propanone.

The diphenyl carbonate on the other hand is made from dimethyl carbonate often made from oxygen, methanol and carbon monoxide.

What is the Average Price of 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheets?

Polycarbonates are believed to be expensive.

This is however if and only they are compared to their counterparts like acrylic and glass.

Based on their application and the many features that hold them as the topmost preferred material, polycarbonates actually offer value for money.

They are flexible and strong at the same time.

It makes them apply in many usages.

Probably this is what makes it look expensive.

Different manufacturers will offer different discounts based on the quantity and you should therefore negotiate for the best deal.

In average, based on several manufacturers, 0.5 mm polycarbonate cost $2 to $5 per kilogram.

The higher the quantities the more cheaply it gets.

Any special additives can be discussed with your manufacturer as this may affect the price.

Can you use Inkjet Printer on 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheet?

Transparent Polycarbonate sheets are very useful when designing art projects, teaching and even business presentations.

When working with a polycarbonate sheet, you may not need to visit a special print shop in order to print the images or texts.

If you have an inkjet printer, then you are good to go.

Just be keen to ensure that you give your print time to dry before you start handling them.

Take away the regular printing papers out of the printer.

If you print the plastic sheet while having the normal printing papers, the printer may jam.

Check to see that there is enough printing ink.

Make sure you use an inkjet printer as the laser printer may burn the polycarbonate sheet and destroy both the sheet and the printer.

Low ink will make the print illegible since the white background provided by normal printing papers is no longer there. Ensure the print is as dark as it can be.

Turn on the printer and load a single polycarbonate sheet with the rough side facing down the printer tray.

The rough side is able to capture the ink prevents smearing.

How do you Print on 0.5mm Polycarbonate Sheets?

To print on a 0.5mm polycarbonate sheet, you can follow the steps below:

To start printing on a polycarbonate sheet, have the required pieces of equipment ready.

The pieces of equipment include:

Printed polycarbonate film

 Printed polycarbonate film

  • A Frame
  • A small sheet of a cardboard
  • Sensitizer and photo emulsion
  • Screen
  • Clean Printing area
  • A Squeegee
  • 250 Watts bulb

The preparations and printing should be done in a dark room.

Step 1:

Start by creating an image or design

This is the design that you intend to print on the polycarbonate sheet.

You can achieve the design by drawing or applying Photoshop to sketch.

Ensure that the image is black or the colour is dark considering the role of the design is obstruction of light.

Step 2:

After designing the image, print it using a laserjet printer on the transparent sheet

In the appropriate proportions, mix the sensitizer and the emulsion and proceed to pour the mixture on the screen.

Spread it thoroughly on the screen with the squeegee at the same time ensuring that the surface you smeared the emulsion is larger than the image area.

Step 3:

With the screen facing down, set the screen and the frame made of the black cardboard.

Put the clear sheet which has the design on the screen.

Fix the sheet to the screen and the frame using a tape.

Move the lamp closer to the sheet with at least one-inch margin.

Leave the layout to rest for about 16 – 21 minutes

Step 4:

You will see some fine blue stripes where the image burned.

If the results of the image are not satisfying, expose it for some extra 10 minutes.

Do not overexpose it for too long as the image may start to bleed.

Step 5:

Sprinkle some cold water over the screen until the image that was burned begin to flake off.

You should be capable of observing through the screen.

Make sure the section of the image on the screen is transparent.

Give the screen some few minutes to dry.

Once the screen is dry, take a tape and cover the area of the screen that doesn’t have photo emulsion.

Ensure all areas are covered apart from the photo emulsion and the design.

Step 6:

Now you get to the printing. Put your 0.5mm polycarbonate sheet that you want to print on.

Place a squared piece of a cardboard right below it.

Have the screen set over 0.5mm polycarbonate sheet and pour a small amount of ink all over the top of the screen horizontally.

Step 7:

Using a squeegee, start smearing ink as you move the squeegee down the up putting pressure on the screen.

You may have to experiment with a waste paper before printing if it is your first attempt.

Repeat the process until you feel that the ink is engraved on the 0.5mm polycarbonate sheet.

Step 8:

Give the polycarbonate sheet time to dry before washing and cleaning the ink on the screen so that it can be used in other printing.

What are the Available Grades for 0.5mm Polycarbonates Sheets?
