What Is the Difference Between Thermally Bent Glass and Bent Laminated Glass in Building Curtain Walls?

If a strong force hits the thermally bent glass, the glass shatters and falls apart, which can be a safety risk. Thermally bent laminated glass, however, consists of two or more pieces of glass joined together with a high-strength PVB or SGP film. In case the glass shatters, the pieces of glass are still attached firmly to the film and will not fall, thereby eliminating the risk of injury.

In the architectural curtain wall, the use of laminated glass in high-rise buildings is usually mandatory.

How Does Optical Distortion Control Differ When Bending Ultra-Clear Glass Vs. Standard Float Glass?

For ultra-clear glass, the iron content in the glass is extremely low, and as a result, ultra-clear glass transmits a lot of light. This makes even the slightest ripple or distortion in the glass visible to the naked eye, making the process of controlling the optical distortion in ultra-clear glass a bit tougher.

In the case of standard float glass, the presence of a slight greenish tint in the glass gives a slight advantage in tolerating even the slightest ripple or distortion in the glass.

How Can Stress Spots Be Addressed During the Processing of Heat-Bent Tempered Glass?

Stress spots (iridescence phenomenon) are oil-stain-like colored streaks on the surface of heat-bent tempered glass, mostly resulting from uneven heating and cooling of glass.

The methods are as follows:

  • Stage of heating: Even heating of the glass within the heating furnace, preventing excessive temperature differences. This can be done using convection heating or optimizing heating element placement.
  • Stage of rapid cooling: The air grilles should be set at the correct air pressure and distance for more even cooling of the glass surface, reducing differences in stress distribution.
How Do Requirements Differ Between Heat-Bent Glass for Appliances and for Building Facades?

Home Appliances: Greater emphasis is placed on high-temperature resistance, resistance to rapid thermal cycles, and chemical corrosion resistance. The testing standards are mainly based on industry specifications for home appliances.

Building Exterior: Greater emphasis is placed on weather resistance, wind pressure resistance, and impact resistance. It should meet the tests for salt spray resistance, UV aging resistance, wind pressure resistance, and impact resistance. Also, it should meet the national standards for curtain walls of buildings (e.g., GB/T 18915, GB 15763, etc.).

Bent Glass Manufacturing Process

Glass Cutting and Preparation

Firstly, we will complete the cutting and pre-treatment of the glass according to your drawings, including size cutting, edge grinding, etc. This step affects the accuracy of the final product, providing a basis for subsequent processing.

Heating and Bending

The glass is heated to soften (usually between 600 –700℃) and then bent through a mold. This is the most important step in the entire manufacturing process. The mold design and processing accuracy will determine the bent glass’s accuracy of the bending radius and appearance.

Annealing and Cooling

After being bent, the glass must undergo a controlled cooling process to relieve internal stress gradually. This makes the bent glass stable and prevents defects such as cracking or warping during your use.

Post Processing

Depending on the needs of the application, bent glass may also need further processing, such as tempering, laminating, or coating, etc. These processes may also enhance the strength of the glass.

What Affects Bent Glass Cost?

Radius Complexity

The smaller the bending radius, the more difficult it is to manufacture bent glass, and the more challenging the requirements for equipment and molds become. As a result, small radii or complex curves typically lead to a great increase in costs. Defining a reasonable curvature early in the project can help you keep the project budget under control.

Mold Cost

Most bent glass projects require custom molds, and it is a one-time cost. The more complex the mold design, the higher the cost. If your project involves a large quantity, this cost can be spread out, and your unit price can be low.

Glass Type & Processing

The types of bent glass and their processing methods both affect the price. For example, tempered, laminated, or insulated glass all need additional processing steps, so they cost more.

Size, Thickness & Quantity

The larger the dimensions and the greater the thickness, the higher the processing difficulty and material costs. At the same time, small-batch custom orders typically have a higher unit price, whereas if your project involves large volumes, you can reduce the unit cost.

Surface Treatments

Surface treatments such as Low-E coatings, other coatings, or tinting may improve the bent glass functionality and appearance, but they also increase costs.

Design Considerations for Bent Glass Projects

Early Design Involvement

We recommend you consult with your suppliers early in the project design stage. They can help you optimize the bend radius, structural design, and manufacturing process. This will make your project more feasible and can avoid the additional costs and delays caused by later modifications.

Structural Performance

Bent glass must withstand wind pressure, its own weight, and other external loads during use. Therefore, when designing, you must take into account the glass thickness, structural configuration, and safety performance to ensure they are safe in actual use.

Installation & Transport

Bent glass is particularly challenging to transport and install, placing high demands on packaging, logistics, and construction. Careful plan transportation methods and installation strategies can reduce the risk of breakage and improve project construction efficiency. This is exactly what WeProFab can do for you.

Compatibility with Frames

Bent glass must fit precisely with the metal frame or structural system, including curvature, dimensions, and installation method. A good fit creates a stable and aesthetically pleasing overall structure; therefore, you should consider the compatibility between the glass and the framing system from the outset of the design process.
