Types of Borosilicate Glass

It is an economical and practical choice, supports cutting, blow-mould and thermoform. However, it is not suitable for high-precision grinding or ultra-fine polishing.

It is the most common types in industry with 3.3×10⁻⁶/℃ expansion coefficient. Offers a balance of hardness and machinability, suitable for precision cutting, grinding and drilling.

Show better chemical inertness and enhanced hardness. At the same time, it is more difficult to process and is not suitable for high-impact processing or rapid, large-scale heat treatment.

With high light transmittance, low color difference, it delivers optimal visual performance and is the preferred material in optics, commonly used in optical windows, lenses and optical instruments.
Features of Borosilicate Glass

Borosilicate glass has a moderate hardness and a low thermal expansion coefficient. So this enables it to be less prone to cracking or warping during cutting, drilling, and CNC processing.

It can withstand a temperature range from -70°C to 500°C, which maintains good stability even under high temperatures, thermal cycling, and long-term continuous operation.

The borosilicate glass has good tolerance to most acidic media, organic solvents, and some chemical environments. It is unlikely to age or be corroded over a long time running.

Have good impact resistance and can adapt to the frequent operation and environmental changes of industrial and research equipment, decreasing wear and equipment downtime risks.

With high light transmittance and low dispersion, it reaches 91% – 92%, maximum single-piece light transmittance and can provide you with reliable optical performance.

Shows a dense internal structure and an extremely low water absorption rate, resistant to moisture penetration and thus providing you with better protection for the internal components.

Made from natural silicon dioxide and boron trioxide without any lead and cadmium. It complies with international standards such as food-grade specifications, FDA and REACH.

Even when exposed to long-term outdoor conditions, ultraviolet radiation and temperature cycling, it will not weather, whiten or become brittle with longer service life than soda-lime glass.

It can be a substitute in some industrial scenarios, but the material profiles of the two are not exactly the same.
Compared to acrylic or PC materials, borosilicate glass usually displays better in high-temperature resistance, scratch resistance, long-term stability, and chemical corrosion resistance. So it is more suitable for long-term use environments such as industrial equipment, laboratory instruments, medical applications or high-temperature applications.
While the plastic materials have advantages in light weight, impact resistance, and cost.
You should carry out a comprehensive assessment based on the specific application, service life and cost to ensure your borosilicate glass product’s performance and long-term stability.
Industrial projects place greater emphasis on your systems’ long-term stability. Although tempered glass has a higher impact resistance, its long-term stability is usually not as good as borosilicate glass in high-temperature or frequent cold-hot cycling environments.
With a lower thermal expansion coefficient, borosilicate glass is less likely to generate large internal stresses in high-temperature environments, effectively reducing cracking risks.
In addition, borosilicate glass has more advantages in terms of chemical corrosion resistance and long-term transparency retention. So it is more widely used in industrial and scientific research fields.
The most fundamental difference between high-boron and low-boron borosilicate glass is the boron content and thermal stability.
High-boron silicate glass owns a lower thermal expansion coefficient, so it performs better in high-temperature resistance, cold and heat shock resistance, and long-term stability. This makes it more suitable for industrial equipment, laboratories, high-temperature observation windows, and optical applications.
While low-boron silicate glass requires a lower cost and its thermal stability and heat resistance are usually not as good as those of high-boron silica glass. So when working in high temperatures for a long time or frequent cold and hot cycles, you should prioritize high-boron silica materials.
Yes. In fact, many borosilicate glass products are not standard flat sheets but require further processing according to the structure of the equipment. No matter if it is special cutting, stepped structure, blind holes, through holes, chamfering or curved surface structure, we can customize the processing based on your drawings.
Yes. Many customers choose ultra-thin borosilicate glass to save the overall structure thickness for those projects like display windows, microfluidic chips, and precision instruments. But this ultra-thin processing requires higher process standards and cost. The thinner the glass, the higher the requirements for flatness, stress control, and transportation protection.
Yes. With excellent dimensional stability and a low coefficient of thermal expansion, the borosilicate glass can maintain its shape and structural integrity in environments even at high or low temperatures or frequent temperature fluctuations. Our borosilicate glass forms a long-lasting, tight bond with aluminium alloys, stainless steel and other industrial structural components. They can ensure your equipments’ reliability and save maintenance costs.
Yes. Due to its excellent flatness and processing stability, borosilicate glass can be used in some display windows, industrial touch panels and smart devices. At the same time, it also supports surface treatments such as AG anti-glare, AR anti-reflection, and anti-fingerprint, which give you better display effect and user experience.
What Is Borosilicate Glass?
Borosilicate glass is a special type of glass material containing a high amount of boron, made by mixing silica, boron trioxide, alumina, and soda or potash soda. It is more stable in high-temperature environments and less prone to cracking or warping due to thermal stress under thermal shock and in chemical corrosion. So our borosilicate glass is widely used in laboratory equipment, industrial viewing windows, medical systems and high-end optical equipment.
What Are the Differences Between Borosilicate Glass and Soda Lime Glass?
Soda lime glass is also another common ordinary glass material on the market. Due to its low cost, easy melting, and easy shaping, it is widely used in architectural glass, ordinary household glass, and basic industrial products.
However, ordinary sodium calcium glass has limited stability in high-temperature environments, rapid temperature changes, and chemical corrosive environments. It is more prone to cracking, increased internal stress, or performance degradation in hard conditions.
In contrast, our borosilicate glass has a lower thermal expansion coefficient. So it is usually a more suitable choice, which can give you more stable performance in high-temperature, rapid temperature shock, and long-term continuous operation environments.
How to Determine if It Is Borosilicate Glass?
From the appearance, borosilicate glass usually shows higher transparency, a lighter base color, and a more transparent overall visual effect. While ordinary soda-lime glass may have a slight green tint. Therefore, you can check if its appearance is extremely clear, with minimal color difference or no color difference at all.
You can also determine this by conducting a refractive index test. For example, when borosilicate glass is placed in a liquid with a refractive index close to that of the glass(such as mineral oil), the borosilicate glasses’ edges will become less distinct, or even present a “disappearing” visual effect.
The Borosilicate Glass Manufacturing Process
Raw Material Preparation
Precisely proportion and mix the raw materials. A typical recipe may consist of approximately 70% silica, 10-20% boron trioxide, and a small amount of soda ash and alumina.
Melting
The mixed raw materials will enter a high-temperature furnace for melting. The melting temperature is usually between 1400°C and 1600°C.It is worth noting that, due to the borosilicate glass’ high melting point, precise control of temperature and furnace processes is required to ensure glass are uniform liquefacts. This can guarantee your finished products’ thermal stability and consistent quality.
Forming
Adopt different forming processes according to product requirements such as float forming, tube manufacturing, pressing or drawing. These methods enable your borosilicate glass product to achieve complex shapes and designs to meet specific industrial or laboratory needs.
Annealing
After forming, the borosilicate glass also needs to undergo a tempering process. In fact, the annealing is a controlled slow cooling process, which can lower the internal stress in borosilicate glass and avoid cracking during subsequent processing or use.
Inspecting
The final borosilicate glass product must be inspected, including checking for bubbles, stripes, thickness consistency, surface defects and internal stress, to provide you with a product that meets the quality standards.
How to Choose Borosilicate Glass?
Temperature
If your project involves high-temperature sterilization (such as at 121℃), baking, rapid temperature changes, or temperature differences exceeding 120℃, it is recommended for you to choose 3.3 standard high borosilicate glass. Its low thermal expansion coefficient and excellent thermal stability can maintain shape and performance under extreme temperatures, and ensure safety during your production or experimentation.
Chemical Environment
If your products need to come into direct contact with liquid medicine, vaccines, biological agents, injections, or other highly clean chemical media, 5.0 neutral borosilicate glass is usually the preferred choice for you. This can better control ion release and reduce the impact on the pH value of the liquid, which could better meet the requirements from the pharmaceutical, biological, and high cleanliness industries.
Accuracy
Apart from the material, you also need to clearly define the processing accuracy requirements in advance. Different industrial equipment have significant differences in requirements for dimensional tolerance, edge structure, and surface accuracy, and these will directly affect the subsequent assembly and production stability.
For example, when it is an optical project such as lenses, prisms, optical windows, laser lenses, and imaging instruments, you will pay more attention to light transmittance, low dispersion, and surface shape accuracy. At this time, NBK7/BK7 and other optical-grade borosilicate glass are usually adopted.
Coating
If the application has further requirements for light transmittance, reflectivity, or surface functions, you need to confirm in advance whether coating or surface treatment is required.
For example, for optical windows, display devices, and laser systems, many companies will add AR anti-reflection coatings to reduce reflection loss and improve light transmittance. While it works in outdoor or industrial environments, anti-reflective, anti-glare, anti-fingerprint, or corrosion-resistant coatings may be needed to enhance the borosilicate glass products’ long-term stability.
Therefore, during the project development stage, it is usually suggested for you to conduct a comprehensive assessment based on the actual application environment, band requirements, and service life requirements.
