Step 2: Know Why Dying Acrylic Plastic is Important

Secondly, you need to know the importance of dying acrylic plastic or lucite. Some reasons why you should dye include:

  • Dying makes it easier for you to decide on your own color.
  • When you dye acrylic plastic, it helps you get the right colors to match the theme of your projects.
  • It is important for you to save money, and dying your own plexiglas helps you save money. This is because tinted plexiglas is quite expensive and comes in a few shades.
  • You can enhance the color settings of your projects with colors that are more exciting and vibrant.

Step 3: Choose the Right Tools and Equipment

For you to be on the safer side, it is important that you do your utmost to choose tools that are ideal. Although the dying process might seem normal, without the right tools and equipment, you will have major setbacks and might end up harming yourself. Some more reasons to choose the right tools and equipment include:

  • To get work done with ease.
  • For you to have top-notch results or outcomes when you are done.
  • To save you time of try and error.
  • You get to save money. Money is saved because you do not need to go over the process over and over again because the lack of the right tools led to mistakes the first time.

Below are some of the items needed for this process:

  • Powdered dye
  • Plexiglas
  • Burner or boiler.
  • Pot (stainless steel) or pyrex glass container for boiling water. It should be large and very spacious.
  • Rubber gloves
  • Eye goggles or eyewear
  • Tongs
  • Acetone
  • Paper towels.
  • Thermometer
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Plastic spoon (large)
  • Dishwashing soap
  • Cool water
  • Tongs
  • Bowl, etc.

Step 4: Choose Suitable Acrylic Plastic Dyes for your Project

If you want to have the best dying process, choosing to use disperse powdered dye is the best. Dispersed fabric dye has proven to work perfectly well. Below are some features of disperse dyes:

  • They are neutral and organic.
  • Come with no ionic bonding groupings.
  • These dyes are water-insoluble.

Step 5: Consider Safety Precautions as you Dye Acrylic Plastic

One area you must never take lightly when you go about acrylic or Perspex dying is your safety. Without the right attention, permanent stains can be left on your most valuable materials. Some safety precautions you need to consider include:

  • You must always wear gloves during the entire dying process.
  • Eye goggles or any eyewear will be perfect.
  • All tools should be washed with warm, soapy water, including gloves.
  • It is important to mix acetone or isopropyl alcohol in the warm water solution before using it to clean or wash.
  • Wear clothes that are breathable.
  • Make sure the process is done in an area with a lot of ventilation.
  • Never allow isopropyl alcohol and acetone to come into contact with fire. Since they are both flammable substances, they can cause a fire outbreak.
  • Ensure the pot being used for dying is never left on the burner without attention.
  • You must not allow the bath to boil to a level where it froths over the pot being used. If you see that something is about to happen, turn the burner off immediately.

All the above details will definitely make the whole experience worth it when you follow them.

Step 6: Apply Dye on Acrylic Plastic Surface

Since all the tools and equipment needed to have this application done are stated in Step 3, you need to make sure they are all obtained. Put on your gloves and eyewear, too. Then, the process can begin as follows:

  • Take out the pot or container that you will use for the process.
  • Measure the dye bath volume with a measuring cup and set it aside.
  • Take your pot and pour some hot water into it. Put it on the burner, then turn it on.
  • Take the measuring cup with dye in it and pour it into the pot on the burner. After that, you can stir with your plastic spoon.
  • After that, you will need to add a carrier, either acetone or isopropyl alcohol, to the solution on fire.
  • Take the plexiglas with your tongs and immerse it in the color solution.
  • Allow the piece to be in the solution for at least 20 minutes, and even more if you want the right color intensity or diffusion. You can check from time to time by using tongs to lift the piece out.
  • On the side, make a warm water-soap solution (dish soap is used here).
  • Use the thermometer to make sure the burner is turned off when heat reaches 85°C or 185°F. By then, the dye would’ve formed tiny bubbles on the water surface. Also, the carrier would’ve been out of the solution.
  • As the burner is turned off, take out the pieces with tongs and put them in the warm soapy water solution.
  • Turn on your pipe and lift pieces into the sink. Keeping them in cool water for a period of time is important.
  • As the pieces cool, lay paper towels down. Then, lay down all the pieces you dyed on them.
  • Leave it to dry. Then you have your dyed plexiglas.
