Do Tinted Polycarbonate Sheet Fade?
Polycarbonate sheets are resistant to extreme weather such as heat, cold, snow, rain which ensures that it can last for many years without discoloring or fading.
The sheets will also remain damage free from impact. Polycarbonate sheets need to be ultra violet resistant for this to happen.
When the sheets are not ultra violet resistant, they fade and discolor turning yellowish in two or three years.
UV Resistant Polycarbonate Sheet Do Not Fade
What Are The Benefits Of Tinted Polycarbonate Sheets?
Tinted polycarbonate sheets are extremely lightweight. This ensures that they can be easily transported and installed when needed.
They can also withstand extreme amounts of force.
The resistance to impact ensures that they are way stronger compared to glass despite being lighter in weight compared to glass.
Bullet resistant varieties of polycarbonate sheets exist which are used in making of items such as police shields.
The unbreakable quality also makes them vandal proof and ideal material for safety glazing.
Tinted polycarbonate sheets also have ultra violet blocking capabilities.
This makes them ideal materials for sunroom roofing, making awnings and the construction of greenhouses.

It exhibits this superiority while maintaining remarkable lightness.
Which makes it an ideal glazing material for environments where protection is necessary against sunlight and other environmental concerns.
A Multiwall Polycarbonate Sheet
They are often used for conservatories and lean-to roofs. Ideal for conservatories, canopies, vertical glazing, displays, roof lights, signage, walkways, swimming pool covers, insulation and more.
Solid polycarbonate sheets are thick for a solid and virtually unbreakable roofing system and have no layers.
This is ideal for protective screens, vertical glazing, bus shelters, windows and doors, train windows and riot shields.
Solid Polycarbonate sheets deliver the transparency of glass, are UV protected on both faces and are ideal for skylights, helmets, security glazing, balustrades, balconies and more.
Brown Solid Polycarbonate Sheet
How Does Transparent And Tinted Polycarbonate Sheet Compare?
Transparent polycarbonate sheet is clear and has no color allowing visible light to pass through the polycarbonate sheet.
Since more light is allowed to pass through, it will be hotter under the sheet.
Tinted polycarbonate sheet provides a slight colour to polycarbonate sheet but the colour is not from paint.
The color is from dyes and pigments which could be added to the material at the factory or after market.
Tinting prevents visible light from passing through the polycarbonate sheet.
Less light passing through means it is less hot under the sheet compared to transparent polycarbonate sheet.
Is There Difference Between Tinted Polycarbonate Sheet And One With Photo Chromic Coating?
Photochromic coating occurs when photo chromic material is incorporated.
While processing the polycarbonate sheets and hence it will tint automatically on exposure to a certain threshold of ultra violet radiation.
They start out clear but turn dark on exposure to sunlight and will go back clear when no longer exposed to the sun.
The more ultra violet presence the darker the tint becomes and the less the ultra violet light present the lighter it becomes.
On the other hand, tinted polycarbonate sheet are permanently tinted dark and do not change color depending on exposure to sunlight.
Will Tinted Polycarbonate Sheet Yellow after Some Time?
Tinted polycarbonate sheet will discolor and turn yellowish after some time when exposed to sunlight.
Ultra violet resistant coating is used to prevent this from happening.
What Are The Available Thickness Of Tinted Polycarbonate Sheets?
Available thickness may depend on where it is bought. Some of the available thicknesses include 3mm, 4.5 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm and 9.5 mm.
Do Tinted Polycarbonate Sheet Block UV?
Tinted Polycarbonate sheet blocks almost the entire relevant UV spectrum, meaning both UVA and UVB.
The material absorbs UV radiation and does not allow it to be transmitted through.

How Does Painted Polycarbonate Sheet Compare To Tinted Polycarbonate Sheet?
Painted Polycarbonate Sheet
Painted polycarbonate sheet is formed when a color pigment or paint applied to a polycarbonate sheet.
Paints compatible with polycarbonate should be used to avoid corroding or interfering with chemical and physical properties of polycarbonate sheet.
Back painting is normally done for the sheets.
Painted sheets allow less light to pass through and hence less heat under the sheet compared to tinted sheets.
Tinted polycarbonate sheet provides a slight colour to polycarbonate sheet.
The color used is usually mixed with white until the tint desired is achieved.
The dyes and pigments can be mixed with polycarbonate while processing at factory or aftermarket tinting can be done.
Tinted polycarbonate will allow more light to pass through than painted sheets and hence warmer under the sheets.
Tinted Polycarbonate Allows Light To Penetrate The Sheets Unlike The Painted One
Can You Cut Tinted Polycarbonate Sheet To Size?
Polycarbonate sheet can be cut to required size depending on intended use.
Items that can be used to cut polycarbonate sheet to size include circular saws, band saws, CNC router and fine toothed hacksaw.
Well, the process of sawing polycarbonate sheet is simple. This is what you should do:
- Wear safety gear and choose an appropriate cutting tool
- Clean the work bench and clamp the polycarbonate sheet.
- Mark out the area you want to cut from the main sheet
- Begin cutting the polycarbonate sheets
Although this process is cost effective, at times, it is not suitable for some industrial setups. For this reason, you can opt for other polycarbonate cutting processes
CO2 laser cutting machine can also be used to cut polycarbonate sheets however they may appear burnt due to high temperatures.
Whenever you’re cutting polycarbonate sheet, there will be friction that can cause heat buildup.
Therefore, you should cool it using either air or water. Polycarbonate sheet will begin to soften at a temperature above 130°C.
Is Tinted Polycarbonate Sheet Impact Resistant?
They are high impact resistant making them nearly unbreakable. They have 250 times the impact strength of float glass and 30 times that of acrylic.
How Can You Test Quality of Tinted Polycarbonate Sheet?
Testing and analyzing various properties of polycarbonates is a sure way of choosing the right polycarbonate grade for a particular task.
During the manufacturing process, the mechanical, optical and thermal properties are tested. Some of the tests done include:
The Impact Analysis Test
It helps to determine the ability of a polycarbonate product to withstand a wide range of impacts or forces.
The test should assure that the material should remain unbreakable in all weather conditions.
Normally, the material to be analyzed is clamped and polyamide balls of varying diameters are fired towards the sheet using a pressurized gun.
This test is conducted based on the fact that, under normal conditions, a hailstone with a diameter of about 20mm may reach the surface with terminal velocity of about 21m/s.
This test is done to determine the extent to which a polycarbonate can resist breakage when subjected to tensile strength.
The ultimate tensile strength has to be determined.
The tensile elongation and the tensile modulus of elasticity are key factors which should be examined.
Thermal Properties Tests
They include thermal conductivity and specific heat, deflection temperature, melting point and the glass transition point.
The Light Transmission Tests
The degree of light transmission is important.
This can be modified depending on the use by modifying refraction and diffusion.
Can You Apply Other Coating On Tinted Polycarbonate Sheet?
To improve performance of polycarbonate sheet, you must add some coating depending on the applications.
Anti-fog coating – it is a hydrophilic substrate that eliminates fog through molecular interactions of water droplets.
Hydrophobic coating – with this coating, you will have a “self-cleaning” polycarbonate sheet or film.
It eliminates dust, moisture or water droplets on the polycarbonate surface.
Anti-scratch coating – this is a silicon based coating that forms a hard coat to prevent possible scratches on polycarbonate sheet.
Anti-reflective coating – this technology eliminates glare and excess light that can cause temporary blindness.
It is made of a thin dielectric that reduces reflection and glare.
UV protection coating – well polycarbonate sheet is not inherently resistant to ultra violet radiation. To protect your polycarbonate sheets, you need an anti-UV coating.
Anti Scratch Coating Protects The Surface Of A Tinted Polycarbonate Sheet
How Should You Clear Tinted Polycarbonate Sheet?
It is done using warm water with a few drops of liquid detergent and a microfiber cloth.
Using an antistatic cleaner will prevent a static charge which attracts dust from building up.
The cloth should be rinsed regularly in water. Machine polishing can also be done.
How Does Tinted Acrylic Sheet Compare To Tinted Polycarbonate Sheet
Strength – tinted polycarbonate sheet is stronger than acrylic sheet. Both are lighter and stronger than untempered glass.
Impact resistance – Tinted polycarbonate sheet is more impact resistant but easier to scratch compared to acrylic sheet.
Cleaning – Both are easily cleaned with regular soap and water.
But acrylic is less resistant to harsher chemicals than polycarbonate is, and should not ever be cleaned with glass cleaners or ammonia-based sprays.
Polycarbonate can withstand the rigours of these types of cleaners and is therefore less likely to be damaged while being maintained.
But once damage has been inflicted it is not easily fixed. Acrylic however can recover from minor damages, such as light scratches at next to no expense and even less difficulty.
Cost – acrylic sheet is cheaper than tinted polycarbonate sheet.
Light transmission – polycarbonate sheet has 89% light transmission whereas acrylic sheet has 92%
Transparency – acrylic is marginally clearer but the gap while negligible can widen if tinted polycarbonate is allowed to yellow.
Both will lose visual clarity over time but acrylic can be polished to restore clarity while polycarbonate clarity cannot be regained via polishing.
Workability – When it come cutting sheets of acrylic and polycarbonate, acrylic is more manageable.
It can be cut with greater ease and noticeably less resistance, especially when using electrical tools.
Drilling on the other hand is where polycarbonate come into its own, as it can be safely drilled anywhere on the sheet with a standard bit and 99% of the time suffer no damage.
Acrylic will withstand drilling but becomes more and more likely to break the closer you drill to the corners.
Can You Machine Tinted Polycarbonate Sheet?
Yes. Machining tinted polycarbonate sheets may involve cutting, drilling and milling.
Tinted polycarbonate sheet can be cut to size using a circular saw and CNC router. A fine toothed hacksaw is recommended for small jobs.
Ensure the material is fixed securely and use light controlled pressure to achieve a good finish. Polycarbonate is not suitable for laser cutting.
Standard wood working drill bits are suitable for drilling holes in polycarbonate sheet.
Be sure to use another piece of material (scrap wood or acrylic is perfect) underneath the panel to act as a backstop.
This will ensure the drilling will not blowout the panel as the drill exits the material.
Center punch should not be used on polycarbonate as it will likely cause damage.
Be patient and drill at a steady speed and pause regularly to remove any swarf collecting around the drill, not doing so is likely to cause overheating and in turn will damage the hole.
When approaching the other side of the panel, continue to drill through it and into the backstop to ensure the exit hole does not splinter
In milling polycarbonate sheet you will use a rotary cutter to remove particles from a work piece.
How Much Does Tinted Polycarbonate Sheet Cost?
The cost of tinted polycarbonate sheet depends on a number of factors such as thickness, dimensions, customizations such as coatings and the brand type.
They can cost as little as 1$ per square meter to as much as 100$ per square meter.
